Honoring the Lord at Table

We share in the Lord’s meal every Sunday remembering Jesus’ last meal with the 12 before his exodus (Lk 9:31; 22:7ff), remembering Jesus as our passover lamb (1 Cor 5:7), remembering the new covenant by his blood. Every first Sunday we eat the Lord’s meal in connection with a larger meal together remembering that we only honor the Lord when we respect one another (1 Cor 11:33), thinking more highly of others than ourselves, being one body, partaking of the one bread (1 Cor 10:17).

Join in helping to prepare our table together. Listen to our meditations at table”. Read about God’s people and bread, about our Lord Jesus at meals.

John 6:26-58 - We must ask ourselves, "What truly satisfies our hunger?" We eventually come to the realization that the longings of our heart can only be fulfilled in and through Jesus Christ. It is essential for us to see Jesus through the eyes of faith and we come to this table seeing the bread and cup through eyes of faith. We participate in the Lord's Supper as one body and commune with one another and with Jesus Christ himself.

Paul handed over the story of Jesus to the Corinthians not only in words, but by emptying his life of anything that might hinder the message of the gospel. And now Paul calls on the Corinthians to hand over their lives to wait for one another, to receive one another, and to serve one another by emptying themselves of claims of status or power over each other around the table. In this way their very lives proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

The observance of the Lord's Table is a reflective time, a recommitment and a testimony of one's faith in Christ portrayed by the emblems we take, the bread and cup. It is a remembrance, an act of worship, and an expression of relationship, a fellowship in the man, Jesus Christ.

What we celebrate, that in which we participate when we come to this table and the emblems that are on it, is a covenant meal. Eating has always been a part of covenants, and when Jesus instituted this new covenant he gave us a meal to share with him.

I Corinthians 11:17ff
"In this passage, the only passage in which Paul talks at any length about the Lord's Meal ... we learn that the bread began a larger meal together that [first-century Christians] ate in a home.... The bread began the meal, in memory of the Lord, and all would eat together. And then at the end of the meal, they would take the cup, and remember the Lord again."

These two tables are not the same, but the central proclamation of this table reaches out to claim that other table and those other tables as well. Because they are related, it is not possible to be faithful to this table and unfaithful to those.... And it's not possible to be unfaithful here and faithful there.
