Lectio Divina

Lectio Divina, or “divine reading,” is a method of reading scripture that calls on the reader to be still and listen to the voice of God. Eugene Peterson calls this turning your eyes into ears. There are four parts to Lectio Divina:

1. Lectio (Read the text) – Actively reading the text by placing a passage within the context of that grand narrative of God graciously acting in the creation.

2. Meditatio (Meditate on the text) – Recreate and place yourself in the story (visualize). Focus on the action of the characters.

3. Oratio (Pray the text) – Pray on a certain aspect of the passage that came out of your meditation

4. Contemplatio (Listen to God) – Be still and listen in silence. Let the word transform you through the renewing of your mind.
